Special Note
The Bishop Griffin Center will be closed on Wednesday, July 3, including both the client hours in the morning and the donation drop off times in the evening. We will be open again for regular hours on Friday, July 5. Happy Fourth of July!
Current Needs
A mother of 4 stopped into the Center recently. We were able to supply her with a number of canned goods, but she had nothing in her kitchen, not even a can opener. Canned goods were useless without an opener, and she is not the only one we see in this situation. We could use donations of can openers, and anything related to cooking.
We also see a high demand for towels and bedding, as well as toiletry items (shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, etc.)

Ravens' Farmers Market New to Our Area
A new farmers marketat Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1555 S. James Rd. is now open every Sunday through the end of Oct. from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Our garden director, Marge Telerski, is serving on their board. Redeemer's website explains: "A collaborative project, we intend to bring fresh produce into our neighborhood that some have designated as one of the 'food deserts' (no grocery store) within the city of Columbus. This is our attempt to say an urban neighborhood like ours cannot and should not be ignored and treated as though we do not deserve the essential components of a lively community."
The name Ravens' Market is taken from the story from IKings 17:6 that recounts the Prophet Elijah being sent into the desert (a place where there is no food) alone. He was sustained by bread and meat brought to him by ravens. "The Ravens' Farmers Market hopes to be just such a conduit of food into our urban food desert."

Center Partners with Joseph’s Coat for Furniture
The Bishop Griffin Center is partnering with Joseph’s Coat of Central Ohio to help meet the furniture needs of our clients. If you are in need, or would like to donate furniture, please contact Joseph’s Coat furniture director Nancy Sandridge at (614) 863-1371.
New Policy Uses Zip CodesIn order to continue to effectively serve clients, the Bishop Griffin Center will now serve only those who live in five east/southeast Columbus zip codes: 43209, 43213, 43219, 43227 and 43232.
The decision comes from a realization that demands on our services are growing at a rapid rate. Without some geographic focus, based on a regional approach to ensure the needs of the central Ohio population are met, we simply were in danger of being overwhelmed. The change does not affect the Mt. Carmel Medical Outreach. They will see anyone without geographic restrictions. While any decision that forces us to turn away someone in need is difficult, we are confident that this new policy will allow us to better serve those who live in our area, and that other pantries are available to assist those who live elsewhere. If you have questions about this policy, feel free to call the center, or send us an email at info@bishopgriffincenter.com. Bicycle Wish ListIf you know an adult who needs a bicycle for transportation or a young person who needs a bike for exercise but can not afford one, contact the Bishop Griffin Center and get on our Bike Wish List. All bikes have been safety checked and repaired. We also welcome donation of good used bikes.
Information about the Bishop Griffin CenterThe Center opened in November 2007 for outreach to the poor. Located at on the grounds of Christ the King Parish on the eastside of Columbus, Ohio, we have witnessed a growing need in many declining neighborhoods. There is also a significant rise in a new class of those in need: The working poor. These are families who are not experiencing unemployment but are unable to make it through the month financially. While our location is a natural outreach to those in need on the eastside, we have clients that come from all over the Columbus area. We are a ministry of the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
